John McEnroe launched his spectacular tennis career at 18 years of age when he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 1977. Later that same year, he decided to remain an amateur and attend Stanford University. While at Stanford, he won the 1978 NCAA singles title and led the Cardinal that year to an undefeated dual match record and the national championship. He won the first of his four US Open titles the next year, repeating in 1980, 1981, and 1984. He was a three-time Wimbledon Champion (1981, 1983, & 1984) and a member of five championship Davis Cup teams. He also won ten Grand Slam doubles titles. He was the top-ranked singles player in the world from 1981 through 1984 and the top doubles player from 1979 through 1984 and again in 1989. In 1999 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
