Rickey Nelson Henley Henderson nicknamed the “Man of the Steal,” played for nine Major League Baseball Teams during his twenty-four-year career (1979-2003). Henderson made his MLB debut on June 24, 1979, with the Oakland Athletics. He led the American League in stolen bases 12 times during his career and holds the MLB All-Time Stolen Base Record with 1406. Henderson was the American League Most Valuable Player in 1990, a 10-time All-Star (six as an Oakland Athletic), two-time World Series Champion (1989, Oakland and 1993, Toronto), Rawlings Gold Glove winner (1981), and three-time Silver Slugger Award winner (1981, 1985, 1990). Henderson holds the Modern-Day season record with the most stolen bases in a season, (130 in 1982) and leads all players with MLB players with 2,295 career runs scored.
In 2009, Henderson was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame with his first appearance on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot.
The Oakland Athletics retired his jersey No. 24 on August 1, 2009, and dedicated their playing surface at the Oakland Coliseum as Rickey Henderson Field on April 3, 2017.
Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
