As a point guard at Cal in the mid-1980s, Kevin Johnson helped end the school’s 26-year postseason drought and was twice named First-Team All Pac-10. Johnson left the school as the team’s all-time leader in points, assists, and steals. Cal retired his jersey. Drafted seventh overall in the 1987 NBA lottery by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Johnson’s career took off after a 1988 trade to the Phoenix Suns. A three-time NBA All-Star with the Suns, Johnson helped lead the Suns to the 1993 NBA finals before falling to the Chicago Bulls in six games. One of only three players to average over 20 points and 10 assists a game for three consecutive seasons, Johnson had his number retired by the Suns in 2001. In 2008, Johnson was elected mayor of his hometown of Sacramento.
