Jesse Sapolu is a former San Francisco 49er who enjoyed a 15-year NFL career defined by excellence, versatility, and perseverance. Drafted in the 11th round (289th overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft, Sapolu defied extraordinary odds, playing his entire career while managing a torn aortic valve caused by rheumatic fever contracted in childhood in Samoa. He spent his entire professional career with the San Francisco 49ers organization and became one of only six players in team history to win four Super Bowl championships (Super Bowls XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXIX).
Widely respected for his toughness, intelligence, and technical mastery, Sapolu performed at an elite level at both center and offensive guard. Known for his exceptional versatility, he was asked by coaches Bill Walsh and George Seifert to switch positions three different times during his career to help the 49ers strengthen their Super Bowl runs. He played his entire career under the tutelage of legendary offensive line coach Bobb McKittrick, who said Sapolu’s position changes cost him perennial Pro Bowl recognition. Sapolu was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1993 and 1994 and earned All-Pro honors in 1994 and 1995, receiving recognition at both the center and guard positions. A cornerstone of the 49ers’ dynasty, Sapolu anchored an offensive line that protected Hall of Fame quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
In 1997, Sapolu authored the most remarkable return in professional sports history by becoming the first NFL player to return and play following open-heart surgery. His resilience and leadership earned him the NFL’s Ed Block Courage Award. Before his NFL career, Sapolu starred at the University of Hawai‘i, where he earned three All-WAC selections and was named Team MVP in 1982. He is widely considered the greatest offensive lineman in school history.
Born in Samoa and raised in Hawai‘i, Sapolu has been a pioneering force for Polynesian athletes. He is the co-founder of the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame and the Polynesian Bowl, a premier high school all-star game televised on the NFL Network, showcasing elite Polynesian talent from around the world. Through his Men In The Trenches (MITT) Academy, Sapolu has helped more than 250 high school offensive and defensive linemen earn college scholarships, creating lasting educational and athletic opportunities for future generations. Extending his commitment to education beyond athletics, Sapolu is also the founder of Sapolu
Destined Academy, an accredited private middle school in Anaheim, California, which opened in 2024. The school reflects his lifelong dedication to discipline, character development, and building pathways for student success.
Following his retirement in 1997, Sapolu has remained deeply connected to the San Francisco 49ers organization, serving for over two decades as an alumni coordinator, further solidifying his impact on the franchise beyond the field.
