Over an eight year period as the first San Francisco native to coach the 49ers, George Seifert compiled what was at the time the best winning percentage in NFL history (.755). Seifert, who attended high school across the street from Kezar Stadium, the 49ers’ first home, worked as an usher at the team’s games, led the 49ers to five NFC championship games and twice won the Super Bowl. The team won at least 10 regular season games in each of his years as coach and set an NFL record by winning 18 consecutive road games. Known for his defensive strategies, Seifert also was an aggressive coach on the offense; his two successful fourth down gambles helped break open the Super Bowl following the 1989 season. Before he became head coach, Seifert was an assistant coach on the 49ers first three Super Bowl championship teams.
