San Francisco native George Archer won 12 PGA Tour events and 19 tournaments on the Senior PGA Tour (now called the Champions Tour). Most memorably, Archer became the first Bay Area player to win the Masters, slipping his arms into the famous green jacket when he earned a one-shot victory at Augusta National on April 13, 1969. Archer, one of the tallest tour pros ever at 6 feet six inches tall, also was known as one of the greatest putters in golf history, a skill he sharpened during friendly putting contests at Lincoln Park. Archer was one of four San Franciscans to win a major championship in a golden era for local golfers, following Bob Rosburg and Ken Venturi and preceding Johnny Miller.

Inducted into The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
