Alice Marble learned tennis at the age of 13 at the San Francisco Golden Gate Park courts. At age 12, she was the official mascot of San Francisco Seals baseball team. She also played basketball and track at San Francisco Polytechnic High School. She was the winner of the U.S. Women’s singles title at Forest Hills in 1936, 1938, 1939 and 1940; doubles in 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1940; and mixed doubles in 1936, 1938 1939 and 1940. She was also the winner of the Wimbledon singles title in 1939; doubles in 1938 and 1939; and mixed doubles in 1937, 1938 and 1939. In 1939, she became the first woman to hold three Wimbledon and three U.S. titles in same year.
Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
