John Madden played football and baseball at Jefferson High School in Daly City. As an offensive tackle at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, but his career ended with an injury in his first season. He coached at Hancock Junior College and San Diego State, then joined the Oakland Raiders as an assistant coach in 1967. In 1969, at age 33, he became the youngest coach in the NFL. He won 112 games in 11 seasons, including one Super Bowl and eight seasons in playoffs.
Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
