A pillar of Major League Baseball and a cornerstone of the San Francisco Giants franchise for 30 years, Brian Sabean’s leadership and legacy as head of the baseball division from 1997-2018 was the driving force behind one of the most successful eras in the club’s history, including three World Championships (2010, 2012, 2014), four National League pennants (2002, 2010, 2012, 2014), five NL West Division flags (1997, 2000, 2003, 2010 and 2012) and three Wild Card entries (2002, 2014, 2016). During his 20-year tenure as the Giants General Manager, Sabean and his staff were responsible for drafting players that contributed to the World Series titles such as 2010 Rookie of the Year and 2012 National League MVP Buster Posey, Two-Time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, All-Stars Brandon Belt, Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, Brandon Crawford, Joe Panik, and Brian Wilson. Sabean also acquired some of the game’s best players via trades, including Giants’ All-Stars Jeff Kent, Jason Schmidt, Marco Scutaro, and Robb Nen, as well as standout performers Ellis Burks, Joe Carter, Andres Galarraga, Kenny Lofton, Jose Mesa, and J.T. Snow. Additionally, the Giants’ GM was also known to bring in reinforcements during the July 31 trading deadline, acquiring the likes of Carlos Beltran, Javier Lopez, Jake Peavy, Hunter Pence, Freddy Sanchez, and Randy Winn. Under Sabean, the Giants were named the Topps Organization of the Year in both 2009 and 2011 and the Baseball America Organization of the Year in 2010 for outstanding performance, depth, and talent throughout the Major and Minor League teams. In 2003, Sabean was named MLB Executive of the Year by both The Sporting News and Baseball America. Baseball America named him Executive of the Year again in 2012 following the Giants’ second World Series championship in three years. He also was awarded the 2010 Major League Baseball Executive of the Year by the Boston Chapter of the BBWAA. In 2018, Sabean received the John Schuerholz Longevity Achievement Award. Prior to joining the Giants, Sabean spent eight years with the Yankees, holding several positions, including Director of Scouting from 1986-90 and Vice President of Player Development/Scouting from 1990-92.
