—the quintessential “hometown hero” and legendary San Francisco Giants shortstop—had a career that defined an era of Giants baseball. Born in Mountain View and raised in Pleasanton,Crawford was famously photographed as a five-year-old fan holding a sign to “Keep the Giants in SF.” Two decades later, he was drafted by his hometown team and spent 13 of his 14 MLB seasons in a Giants uniform, becoming the franchise leader in games played at shortstop with 1 ,617. His 1,655 games overall in a Giants uniform are fourth-most in the San Francisco-era behind only Willie McCovey (2,256), Willie Mays (2,095) and Barry Bonds (1,976). A cornerstone of the “Even Year” dynasty, Crawford helped lead the Giants to World Series titles in 2012 and 2014. He made history in the 2014 NL Wild Card game by becoming the first shortstop to hit a postseason grand slam, and in 2016 matched the NL record for hits in a game with seven. Known for his signature “flow” and spectacular range, Crawford won four Gold Glove Awards (2015–2017, 2021) and was twice named the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year. During his career, Crawford was worth 57 defensive runs saved and led the NL in DRS (all positions) in 2016 with +26. In terms of Outs Above Average, Crawford was +66 OAA from 2016 (when OAA was introduced) until the end of his career, fifth best among all shortstops in that time. A three-time All-Star (2015, 2018, 2021), Crawford enjoyed a resurgent 2021 season where he finished fourth in NL MVP voting while helping guide the Giants to a franchise-record 107 wins. He is one of two Giants to hit a grand slam in his MLB debut (May 27, 2011) and holds the record for most triples at Oracle Park (28). A graduate of Foothill High School in Pleasanton and a two-time team MVP at UCLA, Crawford was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025. He is a Willie Mac Award winner, recognized for his leadership and spirit, and a recipient of the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, reflecting his strong character and lasting impact beyond the field.  He has been deeply involved in charitable efforts supporting education, youth sports and ALS research.
