Billy Martin was born and raised in Berkeley. After graduating from Berkeley High, he signed with the Oakland Oaks in 1946. In 1950, he was sold to the New York Yankees, wherein six seasons, he played in five World Series, batting .333. He retired after 11 seasons playing with Kansas City, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and Minnesota. He later managed Minnesota, Detroit, Texas, Oakland, and the New York Yankees, and led his teams to five play-offs and two World Series, winning the Series in 1977.

Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
