Toyota / Steve Young Scholar–Athlete Award

Steve Young is an inducted member in the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame and the National Football League (NFL) Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is the recipient of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIX and is currently an NFL analyst on ESPN. Beginning in 2012, a $2,500 scholarship established in his honor is awarded annually to one male and one female college-bound high school senior whose academic and athletic careers have been exemplary and whose personal standards and accomplishments are a positive model for others. The scholarship presentations take place at the Annual Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame Enshrinement Banquet.

Scout & Haden Bates

Sho Takahashi


They are twin sisters and their scholastic and athletic achievements were so similar – we felt compelled to select both of them for this award.

Scout has a close to a 4.0 average and as a water polo player has the most career goals for her school and is the team and league MVP for the 2018 season. Haden also has close to a 4.0 average and as a water polo player is 2nd on the career list of goals saved for her school and was her team MVP in 2017. Both Scout and Haden will be attending University of Redlands in the fall and playing water polo.


Sho has over a 4.0 grade point average and is involved in basketball and swimming. Sho has been the captain of his basketball team for two years – his school’s MVP for his junior and senior years and First Team All League in 2019. Sho will be attending UCLA in the fall.
