Lee Evans attended Overfelt High School in San Jose. At San Jose State, he was a member of the school’s NCAA 1969 Championship Team. He set a record for 43.86 for 400 meters in 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, which stood for 20 years. He won another gold medal for anchoring the USA 4×400 relay team to a world record. In addition, he won a total of five National AAU 400 meter championships and was selected four times as the World 400-Meter Champion. For the 1960s, he was voted the greatest 400-meter sprinter in the world for the 1960s.

Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
