All-American in football at the University of Minnesota, Leo Nomellini was the first player selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the team’s original NFL draft. Named top defensive tackle of NFL’s first 50 years, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969 and named to Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1977. While with 49ers, he was the only player ever to make All-Pro both on offense and defense since the two-platoon system was adopted. He was offensive All-Pro in 1951 and 1952, then defensive All-Pro in 1953, 1954, 1957, and 1959. Nomellini was also selected for 10 Pro Bowls.

Inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
