Kevin O’Brien, the President and CEO of the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame (BASHOF), who for the past six years has led the transformation of BASHOF from a small non-profit to a robust Bay Area organization, will retire from his position at the end of his contract, which expires December 31, 2018, announced Mario Alioto, Chair of the Board.
“Kevin is an extraordinary leader who has had an enormous impact on BASHOF,” Mr. Alioto stated. “Mr. O’Brien’s leadership has resulted in a dramatic increase in the growth of the organization, including increases in revenue and in donations to youth organizations around the Bay Area. He has been an outstanding ambassador for BASHOF and we will be forever grateful for his leadership as well as his personal generosity.”
In a statement Mr. O’Brien said, “I have loved my many years heading this important and successful non-profit. Now that I have achieved my goals, and, after 63 years of working, I wish to spend my future with my family, enjoying the company of my three young children.”
The Bay Area Sport Hall of Fame is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that began in 1979 with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s Sports Committee and Lou Spadia, former president of the San Francisco 49ers. Spadia had long dreamed of a Hall of Fame to honor the Bay Area’s athletic legends and often referred to BASHOF as the “Hall without a Hall.” To date, a total of 175 persons have been enshrined and more than $4 million dollars has been donated to youth organizations throughout the Bay Area.
The 2019 Enshrinement Banquet is set for Thursday, May 2, 2019 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. The enshrinement class of 2019 will be announced at a later date.
The process for selecting a new leader for the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame will begin immediately.
