Matt Biondi’s freestyle swimming brilliance in three Olympics, spaced over eight years (1984-88, 1998-92), brought him and the United States 11 medals: eight gold, two silver, one bronze. The University of California graduate set 12 world records and nine individual NCAA records, along with a pair of NCAA relay records. He still held American records in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle a decade after he set them. Biondi was a four-time All-American and three-time NCAA champion in water polo at Cal.
